The Ten Commandments of Getting High Rankings


1. CONTENT IS KING: Its good to write news, blogs and articles in a way thats good for getting listed and to remember to link to other articles you've written if its appropriate but the main thing is providing geniunely good content is above all the most important thing you can do. And not just articles - this goes for pictures and video too.

2. Understanding what your user are after : You need to get in the mind of your customers!   What are they going to be typing in to find you.  
Sometimes when looking at stats it's natural to think that as long as your hits are going up then thats good.   However if your providing the content and information that you users are looking for once they get to your website then thats more effective.

3.Link Building is best done Gradually over a length of time : Too many links to fast will raise a red flag with search engines and you could get penalised. In any case link building to websites that are geniunelly related to your content are not only going to get you up the rankings but may well get you users who are honestly interested in your product or services.

4. Don't be Spammy
There a line here between trying to make sure people know what your doing and not being to seen as spamming them.   Take social media for example - ask yourself if you had lots of status updates waiting on your wall at what point do you decided to delete a company because they're taking up to much space. Meaning you not seeing updates from your friends.
Also with online content if there's no worth to what your writing people will stop reading your posts.

5. SEO is Long Term
Forget those phone calls that tell you can be top of Google within a week. There are tricks that may help to do this short term but a good SEO campaign is built over time.   And done properly improves the value of what your providing to your customers.
Also its about planting seeds that can themselves grow. For example your social media groups can have legs of their own and expand without you having to do anything.   ( except some occasional watering a weeding )

6. Follow Search Engine Guidelines - Google, Bing and Yahoo want great websites to present to their users. So if you want to provide great content they are there to help you get found.   Following blogs like mine or http://www.seomoz.org/blog ,   will help give you a lowdown on new developments.

7. Use social media sites to build not only your community but use it for link building to.

8. Use your meta description and keywords wisely.

9. Search engines don't just have word searches but also images, shopping products, local searches and more.   Make sure your listed well in the categories that will be most effective for what your website offers. For example if you taxi company make sure you get listed for a local search and if you sell items on line then you'll need to get listed in Google Shopping.

10.   SEO skills should run thoughout the company and not just the web designers responsibility.   Everyone in marketing should be aware of the benefits of good SEO.
